Hop in the car and head to the Blue Ridge Parkway for an impressive view of the Black Mountains (Milepost 342.2), one of the prettiest drives in western North Carolina. The Black Mountains contain Mount Mitchell (located in Yancey County, North Carolina), which is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. If you’re feeling adventurous, you’re in good company. Asheville is home to some of the best hiking in North Carolina. The hiking in Asheville attracts visitors to North Carolina from all over.
